Part 1 – Awful Thoughts and Feelings

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called Dealing with Our Awful Thoughts and Feelings.

Every believing Christian’s soul-self is intended to know and abide in the truth of their union with Christ; in union with His Spirit that indwells our human spirit of man” (Prov. 20:27, 1Cor 6:17). Believers are to be enlightened by His Spirit and submitted to the leading of “the Spirit of life in Christ” who indwells them… in the light of God’s word. The great blessing for the trusting believer is that by their union with Christ they enjoy His life and His peace in their soul. “… to be spiritually minded is Life and Peace [for of soul-self].” (Romans 8:6).

Sadly, this is not the case for most Christians. Misunderstanding the truth, religious tradition, and corruption of the word of truth, the Bible is what hinders most Christians. The three functions of our soul, which is our soul, our psychological self, are mind, emotion, and will.

The great problem for most people, including Christians, is dealing with their emotions or feelings. Wrong thinking is what cripples the believer’s life. To be led by what we feel is not the God-ordained order of our being.

as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the [grown, mature] sons of God.” (Rom. 8:14).

  • Most people wrongly assume that what they feel’ or ‘hear in their minds thoughts’ or even what they recall seeing in their minds eye, is the truth, but that’s not necessarily true. Yes, you may really feel and think these troubling things but are they valid? Such things are generally not valid or they have no such power as to distress you.

Yet, sadly, such a misunderstanding can plague and corrupt one’s life, even of a regenerated Christian. It may often even extend to their relationships with others and their place in society.

  • Our feelings’ are actually a reaction to a thought; good, bad or imaginary. These often are not valid feelings. As we will see, every feeling, when first felt, was attached to a thought, attached to what are were thinking.
  • Actually, who we really are as a “regenerated” Christian living in a body with “Sin in the flesh” (Rom. 8:3). Being saved we were ordained to be renewed in our soul’s mind, emotion, and will. This comes to us by knowing God’s love, grace, and Christ’s Cross-work for us.

Thus, we all need to realize the truth that we are liberated from the power of the Sin-nature in the flesh that can negatively affect our thinking and how we feel. The fact is that we have a new identity since we’ve been regenerated with the indwelling pure and righteous “Spirit of life in Christ Jesusnow is us as the new us.

The Apostle Paul explains all the truth of God which has already established in our spirit. Paul therefore says our mind’ is to beset upon or submitted to the Spirit,’ where Christ as the “Spirit of truth” now dwells, for He desires to ‘lead usin our thinking and doing. The “Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” within us leads us by revealing the truth of His written “word of truth,” confirming that truth to our soul’s mind … with understanding. Inwardly perceiving “the word of truth” is not a ‘feeling,’ it is an inner Knowing That’s Deeper Than Our Mind,’ having the inner witness of the Spirit, which is always accompanied with light and peace in our soul.
