Part 1 – The History of Man’s Estrangement from God

The core of fallen mankind’s condition that causes his weakness and pain is his living separated from God and his union with the ‘Sin nature’ that now dwells in the flesh of all mankind (Rom 7:17-23).

This separation began with Adam and Eve, as created. They had been created innocent, and though having access to God in the garden, they still lacked the kind of intimate union with God that God desired and planned for man. This inherent estrangement made them susceptible to the Serpent’s lies that precipitated the fall of Adam and with him… all mankind. Consider the account we have in Genesis.

Genesis 3:1-4 (KJV) Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2  And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4  And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: (Here the Serpent contradicted and called God a liar!) Genesis 3:6 (KJV) And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

The result was that God drove man out of the confines of the Garden of Eden, where they had enjoyed God’s presence, security, provision and care. Thus the separation of all mankind is fixed and rooted in Adam’s rebellious fall.

Genesis 3:24 So he (God) drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of  the tree of life.

Romans 5:12 (KJV) Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world (of mankind), and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Thus all mankind at that time and until the children Israel became a peculiar Nation after leaving Egypt following Moses, were ‘Gentiles.’ All were still separated from God, but then, in Abraham, Israel was blessed with a covenanted program of God whereby God could lead them… but still at arm’s length… speaking through prophets and in signs and wonders. God still was not so intimate as to dwell in them, though it was promised to come later.

Exodus 19:5 (KJV) Now therefore, if ye will obey my (God’s) voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me Above All People: for all the earth is mine:

Ezekiel 36:27-29 (KJV) 27  And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. 28  And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29  I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you.

All mankind today is born fallen, ‘in Adam,’ being separated from God by Adam’s sin and their sins. God called Abraham ~1950 years after Adam’s fall. It was through Abraham’s grandson, Jacob, that the children of Israel were born. Jacob’s name was changed to ‘Israel’ and he bore the 12 sons (tribes) of Israel. These were God’s chosen, “above all people” (Exo 19:5). Israel had seen the hand of God by His freeing them from Egypt’s bondage, and always leading them, providing for and saving them. Yet they were chronically rebellious and separated from God. Jesus said He came unto these “lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matt 15:24) proclaiming the “gospel of the kingdom” (Matt 4:23) that was promised to Abraham’s seed.

Isaiah 59:2 (KJV) But your (Israel’s) iniquities (sins) have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Isaiah 53:6 (KJV) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him (Christ) the iniquity (sins) of us all.
