Part 1 – The Sense of His Life

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called The Sense of Life.

Every believer possesses a “sense” within, which is of Christ within them. This is an intuitive, personal awareness that comes by “the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.”

Our daily living is to be guided by this sense of Him, in accord with the written “word of God.” It’s another consciousness or awareness within us that’s deeper than our mind. Sadly, only some Christians recognize and follow this precious sense of Him who is as close to us as our breath. Most people, saved and unsaved, are aware of another co-perceptive faculty in us that the Bibles called the “conscience” (Romans 2:15). Our intuitive sense of the Lord is different from our “conscience.”

We as believers need to know and abide in accord with His Spirit of life” leading us from withinwhereby we are to become more and more separated from the outer stimulants. It’s by the ‘sense’ of His “life” (Zoë, spirit-life) within that believers may have either… a healthy ‘sense’ of well-being, or… a sense’ of emptiness or distress.

All believers will always spontaneously ‘sense’… one or the other of the symptoms listed below.

Nothing wrong within, or…                                     that something is wrong.

  • Well-being                                                  - Distressed
  • Vibrant, alive                                              - Weakness
  • Satisfied                                                      - Emptiness
  • Buoyant & Bright                                       - Depression & Darkness
  • Comfortable                                                - Discomfort or even internal pain
  • At Peace                                                     - A Knot in the gut
  • At Rest within                                              - Restless
  • Confident                                                    - Unsure

To have the Sense of His Life we must 1st have believed to receive the “Spirit of Christ” into us.

1 Cor. 15:45b …the last Adam (Jesus) ‘was made(became) a quickening (life-giving) spirit.

2 Cor. 3:17 Now the Lord (Jesus) is that Spirit

Col. 3:4a Christ, who is our life, shall appear …

Galatians 2:20 I (Paul) am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me

Christ’s mindset is now in the believer’s spirit, working in us to become our soul’s new mindset. Jesus’ mindset is seen here.

John 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

1 Cor. 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord … But we have the mind (Gk. nous, wisdom) of Christ.

Philippians 2:5 Let this mind (Gk., phroneo, mindset) be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus…

The ‘Sense of His Life’ is not feeling or emotion per se, but rather another level of Knowing, an added Consciousness. This flows from Christ’s “Spirit of life,” that bears His mind… to us.

Romans 8:9-10 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

1 John 2:20 But ye have an unction (anointing) from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

1 John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

The word sense as ‘spiritual sense’ appears only once in the Bible, but it is an innate “knowing” that we have by His life operating within us.

1 Cor. 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; (so) that we might know (Gk. eido, innate knowledge) the things that are freely given to us of God.

(Greek for the word “know” here is “eido,” meaning, “to have or possess perception, innately, intuitively, spontaneously, as by any of our senses.”)

- Physically we innately know by our five senses of sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing.

- Spiritually, we know by an added 6th sense, by His life and peace or lack of His peace within.

The indwelling “Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus,” joined to our spirit, is our source for knowing the Sense of His life. Now God, in Christ, now as “the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus,” dwells in our human spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

1 Cor. 2:11-12 what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; (so) that we might know (Gk. eido, innately know) the things that are freely given to us of God.

Any sense of deadness is due to the mind set on the flesh,” (Rom 8:6), overtaken by the temporal matters or a temptation. One then is devoid of Sense of Christ’s Life and Peace. All of mankind is born out-of-sync, being apart from Christ completing our creation, but we as Christians can enjoy peace and rest in union with Him.

John 16:33 These things I (Jesus) have spoken unto you, that in (union with) me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation (Gk., thlipsis, pressure): but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
