Part 11 of 12 – The Spirit of the Crucified Lord as Our All Sufficient Supply

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called The Spirit Of Life In Christ Jesus.

Christ’s cross experience is what makes Christ’s life, righteousness, wisdom, freedoms, security, guidance, peace, and hope available to believers. Christ’s resurrection “by the glory of God the Father” (Rom 6:4) was as “the life-giving Spirit” (1Cor 15:45).

John here tells believers the anointing of Jesus Christ, as “the Spirit,” reaches and abides forever within every believer as their all-sufficient supply.

1 John 2:20-22, 27 (NIV) But you have an anointing from the Holy One (Christ), and all of you know the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist--he denies the Father and the Son.  27 As for you, the anointing you received from HIM remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as HIS ANOINTING (Spirit) teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him.

These Scriptures above are loaded with truth that every Christian needs to understand. They reveal the scope and breadth of blessing that every believer possesses by Christ’s indwelling as the “Spirit of Christ.”

  • Who is the “Holy One” in verse 20 above? We see by the context noted in verse 22 that it is Jesus “Jesus… the Christ”
  • What is the “anointing” (v20, 27) of the “Holy One” that dwells “in you” (v27) the believer? The anointing believers have of “Him” (v27) obviously is Christ now as “His Spirit” (1John 4:13)!

1 John 4:13 By this we know that we abide in Him (Jesus Christ) and He in us, because HE HAS GIVEN US OF HIS SPIRIT.

  • Christ’s “anointing” Spirit “teaches” the believer “all things” (v27)!
  • Every Christian knows the One who is the “the truth” (v27, John 14:6) is Christ!
  • Christ’s “anointing” as “the Spirit” is “the truth” that “remains in you” (v27) the believer!

“The Spirit of Christ” indwelling the believer is all-sufficient to provide all that is needed for life on earth and for eternity. Colossians 2:10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;

The cross of Christ is the cornerstone upon which the genuine Christian life stands. On the negative side, the cross terminated the power of Sin in man’s flesh, and on the positive side the cross then yielded the resurrected “Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus” to indwell believers. Believers now bear Christ’s very life and nature with all the fruit of the cross.

Jesus’ blood was shed for our redemption and the water of His life as the “spirit of life” was released via the cross. We see this metaphorically in this account of His pierced side on the cross.

Jn 19:34 one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

The “blood” that flowed from Christ’s cross redeems us, and the “water” of His “Spirit of life” flows to enliven and indwell every believer as their new life (Gal 2:20).

All that we possess by Christ’s cross is seen metaphorically in the “compounded anointing oil” of the Old Testament Temple. The OT “compounded anointing oil” is symbolic of the all-inclusive riches of the cross in “the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.” This anointing oil was used to anoint the elements and utensils of God’s Temple. Today all believers are His living temple and bear the Spirit’s anointing. 1 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)…for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

In the Old Testament we see the “Spirit of Christ” as the “compounded anointing oil” of God that anoints believers is indicative of the Jesus’ all-inclusive cross experience. That is, “the Spirit of Christ” now includes the elements of His incarnation, death, burial, and resurrection, ascension, brought into and altering the eternal “Spirit.” These elements are evidenced in the nature of the anointing oil used in the Old Testament Temple. The compounded anointing oil” (Exodus 20:25), as “the Spirit,” dwells within all believers. “Compounded” means the anointing oil includes multiple components.

Let’s now examine the elements of the “compounded anointing oil,” noting their significance.

Exodus 30:23-25 “Take thou also unto thee principal spices,

  • of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and

(Myrrh speaks of His death - Used to anoint dead bodies)

  • of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and

(Cinnamon speaks of the sweetness of His life offered)

  • of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,

(Calamus speaks of the sweetness of Christ’s resurrection - a seeded pod that explodes with seeds being scattered)

  • 24And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary,

(Cassia speaks of the effectiveness of His life offered in overcoming Sin’s tyranny over man - used as snake repellent)

  • And of oil olive an (one) hin:

(“One Hin of Olive Oil” always speaks of the “One” Spirit of God. This speaks of the pure divinity of God into which the elements of Jesus’ human experience, death, burial, and resurrection were added or compounded. )

  • 25And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound (of more than one component) after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.”

(“Compounded” together, these elements make up the One All-Inclusive Ointment (metaphorical of “the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus”) now dwelling within every believer’s spirit to be their ALL.)

From these five elements of the “compounded anointing oil” we see that for believers;

-“God was in Christ reconciling the world to His Self” (2Cor 5:19).

-Jesus’ death is sweet in that He was purely innocent in His death as the only qualified Sin offering for mankind; freeing us from the tyrannical power and penalty of Sin.

-Christ rose from the dead as “the life-giving spirit,” as our innermost anointing to teach, guide and live through us.

-We enjoy the fruit of His indwelling life that comes to us by His resurrected “Spirit of Life.”

Thus we see that all believers have been fully equipped and empowered by the deposit of the “Spirit of Christ” within their spirit.

Philippians 4:13 (AMP) I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency]
