Part 2 – Redeemed from Being Slaves of Sin

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called Romans Road of Core Dispensational Truth.

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (Rom 3:24)

(Christ) In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; (Eph. 1:7).

Every Christian should know well that ALL their acts sinning are forever forgiven through faith in Christ’s cross. Yet, Sin” as seen the singular form in the Bible is the ‘Sin nature,’ from which all acts of sin are produced… persist in both the lost and in believers. At the very root of our ‘sins’ is the fallen Adamic ‘Sin-nature,’ located “IN the Flesh” (Rom 8:3) of all men. Every person as born can’t help sinning; being born of Adam it’s our nature. We are born in bondage to the ‘Power of the Sin-nature.’ This Sin-nature is the very nature of the Serpent whose words in the Garden of Eden were received by Adam and Eve by their rejecting God’s words and choosing to believe the words of the Serpent - Satan. Thus ‘Sin’ became the guiding nature of Adam and has passed to all Adam’s lineage, making us ‘Slaves’ to the Serpentine Sin nature.’

Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, wrote this to the believers at Rome; 20When you were Slaves To Sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. (Rom 6:20 (NIV) Nearly every verse I will site in this article is Pauline. It is Paul who educates us as to our past and present condition relative to Sin and our Redemption from Sin.

Paul here below is speaking to believers, revealing their condition in “time past,” as lost sinners.

1you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to ‘the prince of the power of the air (Satan),’ of the (Sin) spirit that is now working IN the sons of disobedience. 3Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts (desires) of our (sinful) flesh, indulging the desires of The Flesh and of the Mind (of the flesh), and were By Nature Children of Wrath, even as the rest. (Eph 2:1-3 (NASB)

Paul here reveals the frustration of his own Sin problem, by which he later saw the truth “in Christ.”

17it is no more I that do it, but Sin that Dwelleth IN Me. 23… I see another law In My Members (my body)bringing me into captivity to the Law (operative nature) of Sin Which Is IN My Members (Rom 7:17, 23).

Here in this verse we get a glimmer of hope for the lost and of the truth all believers. 3God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh Condemned (judged) Sin In The Flesh (Rom 8:3, cf. Jn. 3:14; Num. 21:4-9).

John wrote of Jesus alluding to this truth above when He likened Himself to the brazen Serpent that Moses lifted on a pole so the Serpent bitten Israelites in the wilderness would be delivered (cf. Numbers 21).

14as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: (John 3:14).

Jesus took upon Himself the likeness of (our) Sinful flesh” and judged it (Rom 8:3), nailing it to His cross. In this way of the cross, Christ’s death was our death… to the power of the Sin-nature. Paul wrote,

7He that is dead is free from Sin’s dominion” (Rom 6:7).  4… brethren, Ye Also Are Become ‘Dead To The Law(How?) By the (crucified physical) Body of Christ… (Rom 7:4).

Jesus said, “Whosoever committeth sin is the servant (Gk., doulos, slave) of sin. (Jn 8:34). “Sin,” is seen as the evil personality of the Devil dwelling IN the Flesh of man.

“For SIN, seizing the opportunity and getting a hold on me [by taking its incentive] from the commandment, beguiled and entrapped and cheated me, and using it [the Law as a weapon], killed me. (Romans 7:11 (AMP)

ALL of mankind is born “in Sin,’ needing to be freed the dominion of the Satanic Sin-Nature.

Thankfully, the Lord ‘Redeemed’ us through the cross of Christ.

1) He Redeemed us from the dominion of “Sin in the flesh,” and the death payment for sins.

2) He Redeemed us from “the curse of ‘the Law,” which is “the power Sin,” even in Christians (1Cor 15:56). I will expand upon this a little later.

Biblical “Redemption” involves the believer’s deliverance from bondage to Sin,’ as its ‘SLAVES.’ We need to understand the word “slaves” as Jesus and Paul used it with regard to man’s condition under the tyrannical rule of the ‘Sin-nature.’ We can look into the exact meaning of the word "redemption." What does it mean to be “redeemed”?

Our English word "redeem" is derived from the word of the Greek Bible text, exagorazo,’ which is actually a translation derived from these three (3) Greek words. 1) agarazo,” meaning,to buy AT the market.”; 2)ex-agarazo,” meaning, to buy OUT of the market; 3) lutron,” meaning, to set free upon receipt or payment of the ransom price.

The Greek “lutron” (above) is transliterated “apolytrosis,” and used here; “In whom (in Christ) we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; (Eph. 1:7).

The payment made for our redemption was in ‘Christ’s shed blood.’

A typical slave owner and slave buyer would buy a slave “at the market,” and out of the slave market,’ making the slave ‘his slave.” Of course the slave was still in bondage, bound to his new owner. Yet, by the Greek word ‘Lutron’, meaning, to SET FREE upon receipt or payment of the ransom price” we see that The Lord Purchased Us With His Own Shed Blood… To Set Us Free from the dominion of Sin!!!

Our Redemption is from the dominion and ‘the power of Sin,” and also from the death penalty that was due us for our acts of sinning (cf. Rom 6:23). Our Redemption is based upon Christ’s Payment of the Price… as our Redeemer.’ The “redeemed” believer has freedom, ‘purchased liberty’ (i.e., the Greek, exagorazo), through Christ’s shed blood.

18 … ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: (1 Peter 1:18-19)  9… Thou (Jesus) Wast Slain, And Hast Redeemed Us To God… (Rev 5:9). 20 You were Bought With a Price [purchased with a preciousness and paid for…… (1Cor 6:20 (AMP)

But then there is a persistent dilemma for those Christians who resist Paul’s “gospel of the grace of God,” still trying to win God’s favor… “Under the Law.  Paul writes of the trap this is for Christians:

56bthe strength (Gk., dunamis, power) of Sin is The Law. (1Cor 15:56b)

10For as many as are of The Works of The Law are Under the Curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in ALL Things which are written in the book ofThe Law’ to DO Them(Galatians 3:10).
1YOU poor and silly and thoughtless and unreflecting and senseless Galatians…2Let me ask you this…: Did you receive the [Holy] Spirit as the result of obeying the Law and doing its works, or was it by hearing [the message of the Gospel] and believing [it]? [Was it from observing a law of rituals or from a message of faith?] 3Are you so foolish and so senseless and so silly? Having begun [your new life spiritually] with the [Holy] Spirit, are you now reaching perfection [by dependence] on the (sinful) flesh? (Gal 3:1-3 (AMP)

The good news of Paul’s “gospel of the grace of God” is that; 13Christ purchased our freedom [redeeming us] from ‘the curse of The Law’… (Gal 3:13 (AMP), thus, 14Sin shall not have dominion over you: for (because) Ye Are NOT Under The Law, but under GRACE. (Rom 6:14). We are Redeemed from The Curse of The Law” (Gal. 3:13) by Christ’s death of the cross, 14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances (Laws) that was against us, which was contrary to us, and (Christ) took it (the Law) out of the way, nailing it to his cross (Col 2:14).

We all are crucified with Christ.” Being dead, we’re free from the Power & Dominion of Sin that yet remains IN our flesh… until we are freed from the presence of Sin IN our body.

20I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I (as a self) live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me (Gal 2:20)

3so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized (immersed) Into His Death? (Rom 6:3)

6… our Old Man (our sin-infected soul) was nailed to the cross with Him in order that [Our] Body (Which Is the Instrument] of Sin) might be Made Ineffective and inactive for evil, (so) that we might NO Longer Be the SLAVES of SIN. 7For when a man dies, He Is Freed (delivered) from [The Power of] Sin. (Rom 6:6-7 (AMP)

4 … brethren, Ye Also Are Become Dead To The Law By The (crucified) Body of Christ … (Rom 7:4)

All believers in Christ’s cross have been “redeemed” from “the Law” that gives power to the ‘Sin-nature’ that had “dominion” over us (cf. Rom 5:20a). Believers during today’s “dispensation of the grace of God” are free from ALL external Laws.  14Ye Are NOT Under The Law… (Rom 6:14). 13(…until the law (came) sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. (Rom 5:13). Today, under grace, 15…where no law is, there is no transgression. (Rom 4:15).

We’ve been REDEEMED, Purchased out of the Slave Market of ‘Sin,’ and set free from the Law with its death penalty. God’s grace and love toward us has done for us what we could not do for ourselves.

“To the praise of the glory of His GraceHe (The Father) Hath Made US Accepted [hath engraced us] IN The Beloved One (Christ), 7IN whom We Have, Redemption and the ‘Forgiveness of Sins according to the riches of His Grace, (Eph 1:6-7 AMP).

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (Rom 3:24)
