Part 4 – “The Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:2a)

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called Life Defined.

God made Himself visible to Israel in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Today God makes ‘Christ as the real life’ known to us by “The Spirit” confirming the written “words of God.”

John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son (the only unique Son), which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him (revealed Him, brought Him out to be seen, made Him known).

1 Cor. 2:9-16 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; (so) that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but (the words) which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural (Gk. psuchikos, soulish) man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

Christ as “the Word” is the expression of the very Life of the Godhead.

John 1:1-3 In the beginning (the beginning without a beginning, before Genesis) was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Isaiah prophetically wrote of Jesus coming as a “child… Son” and as “The everlasting Father” …

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

The “Son” has eternally existed in union with the Father. Jesus said; “I and my Father are one.” (Jn. 10:30) The Father and the Son are of One Self-existent life. God the Father flowed the person of His One Son into the human body of the man called “Jesus of Nazareth,” into the totally human body of “His humiliation” (Acts 8:33).

John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?”

John 1:4a In him (Jesus) was life (Zoë, God’s “Spirit-life”); John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory (expression) as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  1 Tim. 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, …

Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of (came into being by) a woman, made under the law (subject to the law),

Mary gave Jesus His physical body in which dwelled the Father’s Spirit that conceived him.

ALL those who are “regenerated” are literally “born of God,” being partakers of the One Life of the One Son of the One God… by the impartation of “the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.”

  • As to Life, since believers are “in Christ,” they are one life with God the Father.
  • As to Our Expression, we together are Christ’s “body,” the “many sons” of God (Heb. 2:10) expressing Christ’s One Life.

God the Father flowed the Life of Christ to Man… via Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Recall how His blood & His water flowed from His pierced side.

John 19:34 … the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

His “Blood” was for our ‘redemption’ and the “water” was His “water of life” flowing out to us to be His eternal life in us.

Our new life is the result of the reproductive power of the life’ of God in Christ as the One life-giving seed (“corn of wheat” below). Here below, the “corn of wheat” speaks of the Jesus as the seed of life who was sown in death in order to rise and become the life-giving spirit (1Cor. 15:45)” to be seeded into every believer’s spirit. This makes for the “many Sons” of God (Heb 2:10).

John 12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone (as one): but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

We as believers are result of the flow of the ‘life’ of Christ as the One corn (grain) of wheat”

The Old Testament “Water” that flowed from the “Rock” is allegorical of Christ’s “water of life.”

Exodus 17:6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou (Moses) shalt smite the rock,’ and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink…

1 Corinthians 10:4 And (Israel) did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

The Riches of the Water of Christ’s Life… flows out… being available to all mankind.

John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be IN him a well of water springing up into everlasting (eternal) life.

This verse below is exactly as it appears in the KJV. Note the one italicized word, “given.”

John 7:38-39 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given’; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) (KJV exactly)

NOTE: The word “given” (above) is italicized in the KJV to indicate that it was inserted by the translators. The word “given” actually does not belong since “the Spirit of life in Christ” as He is today simply “was not yet” completed to include Jesus’ humanity untilHis death, burial, resurrection, and glorification. Then His Spirit was ready to be imparted now including His victorious human life.

Today the water of “the Spirit of the Life of Christ” includes His elevated humanity.

Now, Real Life for man may be gained simply by believing to receiveChrist as the ‘One Savior’ and as “THE LIFE.”

John 1:4 In him was (the) life; and the life was the light of men. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath (the) everlasting life 1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

John 10:10I (Jesus) am come that they might have (the) life, and that they might have it (life) more abundantly.

John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:Col. 3:4Christ, who is our life

Life is Christ… as the “Fullness of the Godhead”

Col. 2:9 For in him (in Christ) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Ephes. 3:17-19 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Yes, we are filled with His Spirit in our spirit the moment we first believe, but …our souls need also to be renewed to filled with the expression of His life.

The One Life and One Spirit of the Triune Godhead - Christ’s Life is the very Life of God the Father.

John 14:10-11 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me

We can conclude that when Jesus Christ speaks it’s the Father speaking. When Jesus says I AMThe Life,” it’s the Father saying … Jesus is ‘The’ “I AM” and “The Life.”

“The LIFE” is Jesus… who became “the life-giving Spirit” by the resurrection.

1 Cor. 15:45 …The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam (Jesus) was made (became) a quickening (life-giving) spirit.

2 Cor. 3:17a NOW (after the resurrection) the Lord is that Spirit

In the verses below we need to note that the “He” and “Him,” referring to “the Comforter” in vs16-17 becomes the “I” of vs18-20. The One Spirit of Jesus” is the “Comforter” who now dwells in the believer’s spirit.

John 14:16-20 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17Even the Spirit of truth (Christ is the Truth); whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live. 20At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I In You.

Col. 3:4Christ, who is your life

2Cor. 13:5Know ye not your own selves…that Jesus Christ is IN You

We don’t receive the life of God as though it were some “thing” that God can give us as being separate or apart from Himself. No, rather, we receive the very life of God the Father, which is in Christ” now as “the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus” into our human spirit. Christ be (is) with thy spirit…” (2Tim 5:23).
