Part 5 - The Second Goat of Leviticus 16

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called Identification.

We already read of the first goat of Leviticus 16 so now we need to consider the matter of the second goat of Leviticus 16.

Leviticus 16:21-22 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: 22And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.

Hebrews 10:1-2 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

By this second goat and the Priest’s placing his hands to bear the sins of Israel upon the second goats head, as that our conscience is purged. The offering of Christ’s blood not only takes away our sins to redeem us, but also as the second goat to carry our sins away from our conscience. This goat represents the fact that our sins are not only “taken away,” but also our the voice of our conscience that is heard in the head may be cleared of any defilement. Thus, we may be cleansed of a “hurtful conscience.”

Hebrews 10:22a Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil (hurtful) conscience

God was satisfied by the one time shedding of the blood of the Lord, but the second goat indicates God’s concerns for us in conscience. The Lord is so thorough in taking care of us in our salvation and also in our heart’s conscience. We ought not to have a present consciousness of our past sins because our sins were taken away and are not to be found. Again, we must accept this truth by faith in the facts – we identify with Christ as these two goats that represent all that He has done for us by His cross of Calvary - He paid for our sins and has taken them away such that they are forgotten, we are free to forget our sins. He only sees us clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

21 For our sake He made Christ [virtually] to be sin Who knew no sin, so that in and through Him (Christ) we might become [endued with, viewed as being in, and examples of] the righteousness of God [what we ought to be, approved and acceptable and in right relationship with Him, by His goodness]. 2 Corinthians 5:21 (AMP)
