Part 8 of 15 – The Anointing Is Christ’s Spirit Within

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called Two Kinds Of Knowledge.

The compounded anointing oil was prescribed by God for use in sanctifying or setting apart the temple and its contents – the priests, building, and furniture. This anointing oil is indicative of all that we acquire by the inner anointing of the “Spirit of life in Christ Jesus,” now in the believer’s spirit. 1 John 2:20-21 But ye have an unction (anointing) from the Holy One (Christ), and ye know (eido, have the sense knowing of) all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it (eido, have the sense knowing of the truth), and that no lie is of the truth.

The anointing ointment now is the Spirit of Christ Himself (Rom 8:9)after Jesus was fully processed through His incarnation and the cross. Jesus suffered in the body of His humiliation, His human living, His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. It was necessary that He be processed in this way in order for Him to become and release the all-inclusive “Spirit of Christ” to be in us as our all. He became the life-giving Spirit out of resurrection (1Cor 15:45).

Jesus here allegorically prophesied of this process of passing through death in order to multiply His life.

John 12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat (humanity) fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

All that Jesus experienced is now “in” the Holy Ointment of His Spirit which now is in every believer’s spirit! Thus, it can be said in the Scripture that “He was tempted in all ways such as we – yet without sin.” “He can be touched with the feeling of our infirmity.” Jesus’ human experience has been compounded into His divinity to complete the ointment of the Spirit that now is in us as our new life.

Let’s now look the compounded Holy Anointing Oil that the Lord instructed the Israelites to make for anointing and sanctifying the Temple, the Priests and the Temple’s furniture. We will carefully examine each component of the compound in its measure.

First, we see that the “Holy Ointment” is a “compound,” a mixture; speaking of the joining of the humanity and divinity of Christ.

Exodus30:25 “And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.”

We also should note that God is so specific to every detail of the compound components; each is indicative of some aspect of the cross. The “holy ointment” here is an aromatic, sweet smelling, “compound” of a mixture of elements. The anointing oil’s elements speak of the “sweetness” and effectiveness of Christ’s death and resurrection.

This anointing oil is a five (5) part compound consisting of these specific four (4) spices mixed into olive oil. We will now examine each verse that describes the compound. (The Scriptures here are “italicized with parenthesis” and my explanative notes are not.)

Exodus 30:22-2522Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses, saying …”

23Take thou also unto thee principal spices…”

You will note there four (4) spices listed that form three (3) groupings of spices with a measure of 500 shekels. The “three” (3) groupings of spices speak of the Trinity of the Godhead.

1st spice) “of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and…”

Group 1.) Consists of one item of 500 shekels of Myrrh, commonly used to embalm dead bodies – This speaks of Christ’s death.

2nd spice) “…and of sweet cinnamon half so much, two hundred and fifty shekels,”

Cinnamon represents the sweetness of Jesus’ death

3rd spice) “and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,”

Calamus represents the power of His resurrection because calamus is a reed that forms a seed-pod, which explodes shooting out its seeds to multiply its life.

Group 2.) Note that the 2nd & 3rd spices total 500 shekels that are split 250 shekels and 250 shekels. This speaks of Jesus being broken or split on the cross, for us. This duality represents the two aspects of the cross.

1) His physical death is for the termination of the fallen sinful flesh-life of the “old man” (Rom 6:3, 6a, 7:4, Gal 220a).

2) His resurrection is for the germination of Christ’s life in the new man (Rom 6:4).

4th spice)24And of cassia five hundred shekels,”

Cassia is a thorny tree whose bark produces an aromatic gum of that was used as snake repellent.

Group 3.) Consists of the one item of 500 shekels of Cassia. Cassia was used as a snake repellent. This speaks of the effectiveness of the cross, freeing man from the power of the Serpent. (1John 5:18)

5th - Oil) “and of oil olive an (one) hin:”

Olive oil in the Bible always represents the One (1) divine Spirit God

Ointment Summary: All that we believers have received of Christ comes out of His death, burial, and resurrection!

The Ointment contains the elements of; 1) Our Death (our termination) & 2) Our New Life (our germination).
