born again

Paul and Regeneration

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the Holy Ghost." (Titus 3:5)

Paul never uses the words "born again" as John does so often in his gospel and his epistles. Yet Paul does use two key words that are its equivalent; "regeneration" and "child" and which expand our understanding of what occurs when one is "born again."

Born 'Again' Defined

What exactly does it mean for one to be "born 'again"? The word "again" has a specific meaning.

Since words mean something, it is obvious that only one who has been born of God's doing a 'first time' can be 'born again.'

You will recall that Abraham and his wife Sarah, who was "dead in here womb" miraculously had a son who was promised by the Lord and through the Lord's intervention. She conceived and bore a "son of promise," Isaac.

Is John 3:16 the Hope of the Gentiles?

A key to proper Bible study and interpretation is that we must note to whom the words recorded are spoken and about whom these words concern. As students of the Bible we can learn and gain from ALL God-breathed Scripture, but not necessarily all that is written is about us or to us as Gentiles.
