Self-righteousness

Acknowledging Our Sin

The self-righteous Pharisees had brought a fallen woman caught in adultery to Jesus and, “when they had set her in the midst,” they began to accuse her, saying: “Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest Thou?” (John 8:5).

They were using this fallen woman to embarrass the Lord into agreeing that this woman should be stoned, or else leaving Himself open to a charge of repudiating Moses’ Law.

A Stone of Stumbling

Prophecy fulfilled in Christ’s death and resurrection.

Psalm 118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

The head stone here is also called the corner stone, from which a building is measured and laid out to be in perfect alignment and order, as a building that will stand long and strong.

Shortly after the crucifixion of Jesus Peter spoke these words to the people of Israel concerning Jesus whom they had crucified.
