Chapter 1 - Why The Five Solas

This Article is part of a multi-part Study Series called The Five Solas.

The Protestant Reformer's "Five Solas" that we will delve into in this study were derived mainly from Paul's thirteen epistles to "the body of Christ." Paul warns us that we should stand for the pure, unadulterated, word of God and His 100% pure grace gospel, studied in context and "rightly divided" (2Tim 2:15).

The resurrected and ascended Lord Jesus Christ Himself, directly from heaven, called Saul of Tarsus, who He then saved, and whose name was changed to "Paul, THE Apostle to the Gentles" (Rom 11:13). Christ saved Paul and gave him the unique message of the "The Mystery" (cf., Col 1:25-27) and the ministry of "the Gospel of the GRACE of God" (Acts 20:24) "for ye Gentiles" (Eph 3:1-5).

"Paul, THE Apostle to the Gentiles" (Rom 11:13) received "revelations" (2Cor 12:7) directly from the Lord Jesus Christ (cf., Gal 1:10-12). These "revelations" included the full meaning and ALL-SUFFICIENCY of Christ's sacrifice on the cross as we see in Paul's epistle to the Romans. Paul then also reveals the detail of Christ's resurrected "Spirit of life"  coming to eternally indwell each of His believers human spirits (cf. Rom 8:9-10, Col 1:27) as His living "temple" (1Cor 3:16), which is called "the church, which is His body" (Eph 1:22b-23a). The "body of Christ" is Christ's present incarnation on the earth today!

Today's age of "the dispensation of the grace of God" will end the "catching away (Rapture)" of 'the body of Christ' to meet the Lord in the air" (cf., 1Thes 4:13-17). Every member of "the body of Christ" will then be taken by Christ Himself to dwell with Him "eternal in the heavens" (2Cor 5:1b).

Paul was the first to ever receive the "Revelation of the Mystery" (v 25 below) that God had eternally planned, but "kept secret." This was the "gospel (good news) of the grace of God"... "for ye Gentiles (Eph 3:1-5), offered to "all men" (Eph 3:9, cf., Gal 3:28). Christ's believers become immediate members of "the church which is His body"; and they'll see "the REVELATION (unveiling) of THE 'MYSTERY" that forever changes their lives!

25Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my (Paul's) gospel, and the preaching of Jesus CHRIST according to the  REVELATION (unveiling) of THE 'MYSTERY' (God's secret plan), which was (had been) KEPT SECRET SINCE THE WORLD BEGAN" (Romans 16:25)

"THE Mystery" is Paul's "mystery gospel," which is "Christ IN YOU the hope of Glory" (read Col 1:25-27).

Paul's purpose for believers is "to Make All Men SEE what is the FELLOWSHIP of THE MYSTERY, which from the beginning of the world HATH BEEN HID (concealed) IN GOD, who created all things by Jesus Christ" (Eph 3:9). This is the mission for the members of "the body of Christ" who are as Paul says "ambassadors of Christ" (2Cor 5:20). This "fellowship of the mystery" is the fruit of "the Mystery," whereby believers enjoy the union of Christ INDWELLING their human spirit. This then is "THE MYSTERY" that Paul says "was Kept Secret since the world began" but now is REVEALED to us as ... "CHRIST IN YOU"!

"Whereof I (Paul) am made a minister, according to 'the dispensation of God' which is given to me (Paul) for you, to fulfil (Gk. pleroo, complete or finish) the word of God; 26 Even The Mystery Which Hath Been Hid From Ages And From Generations, BUT NOW is made manifest to his saints: 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of This MYSTERY among the GENTILES; which Is CHRIST IN YOU, the hope of glory: 28 whom we preach..." (Col 1:25-27)

The "Spirit of life in Christ" (Rom 8:2) now indwells every believer to be "One Spirit" with their human spirit (1Cor 6:17), and to be their "hope (expectation) of (eternal) glory" (Col 1:27b).

The "Five Solas" emphasize that we today live in the unique age of "the dispensation of the grace of God," (Eph 3:2), the age of God's pure "grace," under which men may be "SAVED BY GRACE (alone) THROUGH FAITH (alone)… in Christ (alone), as The GIFT OF GODNOT OF WORKS" (Eph 2:8-9). We can't earn or enhance our salvation by our good works or piety; nor can we earn favor from God after salvation. The "dispensation of the Grace of God" (Eph 3:2) in which we live is in counter-distinction to the dispensation of "the Law" given to Israel with "the gospel of the kingdom" that Jesus proclaimed to Israel only.

Thus in the next chapter I begin our study by defining "Christ According to the Revelation of 'the Mystery," which is the foundation of Paul's "Gospel of Christ" (Rom 1:16) that stands upon the truths of the "Five Solas."
