The Law of the Spirit in Christ Jesus

"the law (operation) of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus, hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” (Rom 8:2)

When one realizes his need of Christ and places his trust in Jesus Christ as his Savior he is justified before the court of God because Jesus’ death and righteousness are imputed or counted to him. A believer is reconciled to God by Christ's sacrificial offering of Himself. This is the judicial aspect of salvation. But Paul writes that there is "much more" than being reconciled to God.

"... when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, Much More, being reconciled, we shall be Saved (Gk., sozo, completed) By His Life. (Rom 5:10);  "...Ye are complete in Him..." (Col 2:10)

The moment we received Christ as our Savior we were 'saved' from judgment... but also something else happened, beyond having our sins freely forgiven. Christ's as  "Spirit of life" regenerated us (cf. Titus 3:5), by giving us 'His life.' So, the sinner who sincerely places his trust in Christ as Savior has his sins forgiven... and He is also given the "Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" to dwell within him as his new and eternal life.

"...Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." (Romans 8:9)

“He that hath the Son hath life….” (1Jn 5:12) “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.” (Jn 3:36)

The word "life" in each of these verses I've noted is the Greek word "Zoë," meaning the "God's spirit-life." This not the biological life (Greek "bios") or the psychological life (Greek "psuche"). In fact, "Zoë" in these verses refers to Christ's very own resurrected "Spirit of life," which is dispensed into the believer's own human spirit, never to depart or be separated from the believer.

When Jesus rose from the dead it was as the "life-giving spirit" (1Cor 15:45). Paul clearly tells us that "Now" the resurrected Lord Jesus is "that Spirit," - "Now the Lord is that Spirit..." (2 Corinthians 3:17a). He alone is the One who is "the life" (John 14:6).

The "law (operation) of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" is part and parcel with receiving Christ as Savior. It is the irrevocable work of God then operating within everyone who will trust Christ alone as their Savior. The word "law," as in "the law of the sin and death" and "the law of the Spirit of Life," (Romans 8:2), is the  Greek word "nomos," meaning "method of regulation." Before we believed to receive Christ, we were regulated by the Sin spirit and it's nature (cf. Eph 2:2) - the "Law (operation) of Sin and death." Sin will ultimately bring forth physical death to our bodies. But now, having believed, we've received the "spirit of life in Christ Jesus." We're now made eternally alive, spiritually, no longer subject to eternal death. We're now to be regulated by Christ's "Spirit of Life" indwelling, guiding and empowering us from within

This also means if die physically we are assured that His resurrection life will raise us at the Rapture. Christ's "Spirit of life" has indwelt us all this time since we first believed - whether we've at times subsequently failed Him or not. Having received Christ's literal "Spirit of Life" is immutable. We are eternally one with His life such that we are now "one spirit" with His Spirit. "...he that is joined unto the Lord is 'one spirit" (1Cor 6:17). Just a tea is mingled with water and indivisible, so is our union with Christ by "His Spirit in our spirit."

It's also an immutable law, that sin brings forth death (Rom. 5:12; 6:23; 1Cor 15:56). "... by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and Death By Sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Rom 5:12).

The fact is that every believer has already died with Christ (cf. Rom 6:3) by placing their faith "in Christ." Each believer also has been given Christ's resurrection life by simultaneously receiving "the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus." This new life can never be forfeited, because this life was given to him as a gift, "by grace through faith (alone)" (Eph 2:8-9) and this life is nothing less than the literal everlasting life of Jesus Christ.

Thus, “the law of the Spirit” that is of the “life in Christ Jesus” has literally made the simplest believer free from the power of "the law of sin and death.” All believers are delivered from sin's penalty by Christ's death. They also are delivered from sin's power over them by Christ's resurrection life in them.

Each of us will one day, at the Rapture, be resurrected a He was, in a new incorruptible 'spirit-body' (1Cor 15:51-52). Thus, the Apostle Paul could write; “The Law Of The Spirit, (That Is) Life In Christ, hath (already) made me free from (the effects of) the law of sin and death.”
